About Alexander Graham Bell Graduate Scholarship

The CGS D program supports and promotes research excellence in a wide variety of disciplines and broad fields of health, natural sciences and engineering, and social sciences and humanities, including interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research.
This support allows scholars to fully concentrate on their doctoral studies, to seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields and to contribute to the Canadian research ecosystem during and beyond the tenure of their awards.

Benefits of the Alexander Graham Bell Graduate Scholarship

$35,000 annually for 3 years

Eligibility for Alexander Graham Bell Graduate Scholarship 

To be eligible to apply, you must;

  • be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada or a Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada), as of the application deadline
  • have completed no more than 24 months of full-time study in your doctoral program by December 31 of the calendar year of application if previously enrolled in a graduate program
  • have completed no more than 36 months of full-time study in your doctoral program by December 31 of the calendar year of application if enrolled in a joint program; for example, MD/PhD, MA/PhD
  • if you fall into this category, you have access to the 36-month window whether or not you were previously enrolled in a master’s program
    have completed no more than 36 months of full-time study in your doctoral program by December 31 of the calendar year of application if enrolled directly from a bachelor’s to a
  • PhD program (not previously enrolled in a graduate program)
    direct-entry applicants must be enrolled in their doctoral program at the time of application

How to Apply to Apply for Alexander Graham Bell Graduate Scholarship 

  • Eligible applicats who have been registered at a post-secondary institution within the calendar year are submit their application through their University while others are required to submit a direct online application.

Selection Process for Alexander Graham Bell Graduate Scholarship Programme

  • There is one application and selection process for the CGS D and the PGS D. The top-ranked applicants will be offered a CGS D, and the next tier of meritorious applicants will be offered a PGS D.
  • The selection committees recommend scholarships for the applications they consider to be most meritorious, according to the selection criteria described in the CGS D program description and within the limit of available awards
  • If you are offered a CGS D, but decide to take your award to an eligible foreign institution and are eligible to do so, you must decline the CGS D and accept a PGS D award in its place.

Selection Criteria for Alexander Graham Bell Graduate programme

The evaluation of CGS D applications, whether by institutions or the agencies, is based on the following criteria:

  • Research ability and potential
  • Relevance experience and achievements obtained within and beyond academia.

Application Deadline

  • If you are applying through an institution, you must submit your application by the deadline set by the institution, which may be well in advance of the agency deadline.
    The institution will review and rank all applications received and submit the recommended applications to the agencies by November 21. If the deadline falls on a weekend, applications can be submitted the following business day before 8:00 p.m. (ET).
